Peacock feathers are known for their vibrant colors and intricate design, and with this simple crochet pattern, you can capture that beauty in yarn! This project uses the popcorn stitch to create the base of the feather, followed by rounds of half-double crochet, double crochet and picot to form the iconic peacock tail shape. Let’s get started!
Materials You’ll Need:
- Yarn
- Crochet hook (size appropriate for your yarn)
- Stitch markers
- Scissor
- Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
Crochet Pattern: Peacock Tail Feather
Step 1: Create the Popcorn Stitch (Cobalt Blue Yarn)
- Ch 5: Place a stitch marker in the first and fifth chains. These will help you identify key points in the stitch.
- Start Popcorn Stitch: Starting in the fifth chain from the hook, crochet 5 treble crochets (TR) into that stitch.
- Slip Stitch to Complete: After the 5 treble crochets, slip stitch back into the fifth chain (where you placed the stitch marker) to complete the popcorn stitch. Remove the stitch marker at this point.
- Ch 1: Place a stitch marker in this chain. Then Ch 1 more to fasten off the cobalt blue yarn.
At this point, you’ll have a nice rounded popcorn stitch as the base of your peacock feather.

Step 2: Add the First Round (Light Blue Yarn)
- Rnd 1: Start with a Ch 2: This counts as the first half double crochet (HDC). Insert your hook into the hole under the stitch marker (the one from the cobalt blue popcorn stitch), and make another HDC in the same hole.
- 7 HDC over Popcorn Chain: Crochet 7 HDC evenly across the chain 4 section of the popcorn stitch.
- HDC on Stitch Marker Stitch: Make one HDC on the stitch marked by your stitch marker.
- 7 HDC on Other Side of Popcorn: Work 7 HDC evenly along the other side, covering the last treble crochet of the popcorn stitch.
- Complete with 2 HDC: Finish by making 2 HDC stitches in the same hole as the first stitch. You should have 18 HDC at the end of this round.

Step 3: Shape the Feather (Light Blue Yarn)
- Rnd 2: Start with a Ch 2: This counts as an HDC. Work 1 HDC in the same stitch.
- 7 HDC Along the First Side: Crochet 7 HDC along the first side of the round.
- Peacock Tail Tip: Now, for the center decorative point:
- DC Increase: Make 1 DC, then crochet 1 Ch, and a picot stitch (Ch 3, then sl st into the first chain of the 3-chain loop).
- Ch 1, and make another DC Increase (2 DC in the same stitch).
- DC in Next Stitch: Continue by making 1 DC in the next stitch.
- 7 HDC Along the Other Side: Crochet 7 HDC along the other side to balance out the feather.
- Finish with 2 HDC: Finally, crochet 2 HDC in the same stitch as the first stitch to complete the round.
7. Fasten Off: Slip stitch into the first stitch of the round. Ch 3 and cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing Touches:
- Weaving in Ends: Use your yarn needle to weave in any loose ends and secure the tail feather.
- Sewing the Feather: Use the long tail you left from Round 2 to sew the feather onto your chosen project, whether it’s a blanket, scarf, or accessory.
Tips for Success:
- Keep your tension consistent when working the popcorn stitch to ensure your feather has a uniform, rounded shape.
- Use stitch markers liberally, especially for the popcorn stitch and picot, to make sure everything stays aligned.
- Experiment with colors! You can add more layers with different shades of green, gold, or turquoise to create an even more vibrant peacock feather.
